C’est presque en fanfare que les marchés obligataires entament cette année 2023, après l’annus horribilis 2022 que tous les investisseurs étaient si heureux de laisser derrière eux… Des taux souverains qui se resserrent violemment, un marché primaire pléthorique, des entrées importantes sur la classe d’actifs… Si l’année 2023 sera effectivement sans doute celle d’un retour des obligations dans de nombreux portefeuilles, est-il urgent de se précipiter comme le semble le faire le marché ? Cette chute des taux n’est-elle pas un trompe-l’œil ? Quels écueils et quels risques sera-t-il important de prendre en considération dans son allocation ?
Nous tenterons dans ce premier hebdo de l’année de dessiner les grandes lignes du marché et de notre allocation obligataire pour ce début d’année.
1- Des taux souverains en trompe-l’œil pour cette première semaine
Avant de passer à une vision un peu plus long terme, rassurons ici les investisseurs qui n’auraient pas encore investi et qui auraient l’impression qu’ils auraient manqué le train… A lire les actualités ou observer les graphiques depuis quelques jours, on pourrait en effet avoir l’impression que le marché des taux serait extrêmement volontaire et que la récession ou une politique accommodante de la BCE serait au coin de la rue. Il n’en est rien, pour le moment en tous cas. Le mouvement très haussier sur les obligations d’Etat n’est, pour l’heure, que le pendant du « sell-off » de fin d’année sur les mêmes obligations, « sell-off » lié à l’illiquidité et à des prises de positions short sur les futures mais qui ne s’était pas du tout propagé aux autres obligations du marché. Ainsi sur le seul mois de décembre, les indices souverains réalisaient une performance de -5%...
Dans le même temps les obligations corporates n’avaient que peu évolué, le marché du « real money », c’est-à-dire les investisseurs plaçant vraiment leur trésorerie et non les investisseurs spéculatifs agissant la plupart du temps en dérivés, n’ayant aucune vélléité de céder des obligations, bien au contraire. Ainsi sur la période, les obligations d’entreprises ne perdaient que 2% et les obligations high yield 0.7%.
C’est donc un mouvement à peu près opposé que l’on observe en ce début d’année mais qui n’est, pour le moment, que pure volatilité et qu’il ne faut guère prendre pour Quelques lignes directrices obligataires pour ce début d'année une tendance durable, bien que les observateurs et autres chroniqueurs se sentent obligés d’y trouver une explication rationnelle, chiffres d’inflation ou morceau de phrase d’un membre quelconque de banque centrale à l’appui.
2- Quelques grandes lignes pour l’année 2023
Si les obligations et leur rémunération retrouvée semblent un actif à privilégier pour cette année 2023, c’est aussi parce qu’elles représentent pour les investisseurs un actif répondant à une certaine insécurité ambiante, tant sur plan économique que géopolitique. Il conviendra donc d’éviter, tant que possible, ces risques, aussi dans ses investissements obligataires, afin que l’actif de la sécurité ne soit pas, comme il le fut en 2022, source d’une volatilité et d’une inquiétude trop importantes. Nous raisonnerons donc ici en termes de risques en place et de directions à privilégier ou à éviter en face de ces risques, encore très prégnants ou en cours de constitution, qu’il s’agisse de l’inflation, de la possible récession, de la volatilité, d’un rebond des défauts, etc… Peu de rédaction dans ces lignes directrices mais plutôt des indications et des observations, que nous détaillerons, pour les lecteurs qui souhaiteront participer, dans notre présentation annuelle du 10 janvier 2023 (inscription au Webinar ici)
A) L’inflation
- Eviter les bascules de duration trop soudaines dans les portefeuilles dans un contexte volatile et de courbe des taux assez plate. On pourra reconstituer un regain de duration dans les portefeuilles, notamment institutionnels, par accumulation progressive.
- Limiter les secteurs consommant beaucoup d’énergie, notamment en amont des publications du T4 2022 et du T1 2023. On limitera notamment l’industrie lourde, la chimie et le secteur aérien.
- Constituer une poche résiliente ou profitant de l’inflation : énergie et para-énergie, entreprises à fort pricing power, notamment dans l’agroalimentaire ou la technologie de spécialité.
- Compte tenu de l’extrême volatilité sur les sous-jacents de l’inflation et de l’inflation déjà anticipée, les indexées inflation resteront très volatiles, éminemment spéculatives et peu protectrices.
