La semaine passée a enfin apporté des rendements positifs aux investisseurs, les marchés du crédit rompant avec une série de sept semaines de pertes. La tendance claire a été la surperformance générale des actifs américains, que ce soit sur les marchés des actions, du crédit ou des obligations d'État. À titre de comparaison, le rendement du Trésor américain à 10 ans a baissé de 19 points de base depuis le début du mois, alors que le rendement du Bund allemand à 10 ans a quant à lui augmenté de 4 points de base. Le high yield américain a surperformé le high yield européen de plus de 2 % depuis le début de la semaine. Les banques centrales sont-elles responsables de cette dislocation des prix ?
La semaine passée, nous avons également assisté à la publication des minutes de la réunion de mai du Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC)1, dont l’une des principales déclarations a été :
"Les participants étaient d’accord pour dire que les perspectives économiques étaient très incertaines et qu’il était nécessaire que les décisions politiques se prennent sur la base des données économiques et se concentrent sur le retour d’une inflation à 2 % tout en maintenant des conditions de marché du travail solides. À l'heure actuelle, les participants ont jugé qu'il était important de passer rapidement à une orientation politique monétaire plus neutre."
Sur le long terme, en supposant une inflation qui tende vers les 2%, le taux d'équilibre nominal est estimé par le FOMC à 2.375% ; ce n'est manifestement pas le cas actuellement, mais les minutes de la réunion n'ont tout de même pas été aussi bellicistes que le marché l’anticipait. En outre, les gouverneurs de la Réserve fédérale (Fed) ont atténué leur discours belliciste. Le président de la Banque fédérale de réserve de Saint-Louis, M. Bullard, a abandonné son idée d'une hausse de 75 points de base, préférant désormais des hausses de 50 points de base pour le reste de l'année. De plus, il a suggéré que si l'inflation était réduite, les taux d'intérêt pourraient être abaissés dès 2023, tandis que le président de la Banque fédérale de réserve d'Atlanta, M. Bostic, a suggéré que le FOMC pourrait même faire une pause plus tard dans l'année en faisant une analogie avec les camions de pompiers : "même les camions de pompiers avec sirènes hurlantes ralentissent aux intersections de peur de causer d'autres problèmes qui pourraient être évités". Le FOMC estime qu'il en a fait assez pour ancrer les attentes d'inflation et qu'il a maintenant ajusté les conditions financières à des niveaux neutres. Il semble qu'il préfère attendre et observer les données sur l'inflation et l'activité au cours de l'été avant de s'engager dans un nouveau resserrement à partir de septembre.
Pour les hawkish et dovish, les minutes de la réunion et le changement de ton des gouverneurs de la Fed ont peut-être été une déception, mais pour tous les autres, la probabilité d'une récession immédiate a baissé. Il est d’ailleurs intéressant de noter que la durée nécessaire pour retrouver un point haut originel suite à une baisse est en moyenne de quatre mois, à condition d’être en dehors d’une période de récession (voir le graphique de la semaine).
Pourtant, les dovish n'ont pas été déçus par le ton hawkish de la Banque centrale européenne (BCE), qui est toujours concentré sur la normalisation des taux d'intérêt. La présidente de la BCE, Mme Lagarde, a déclaré que la zone euro "n'aura plus de taux négatifs avant la fin du troisième trimestre". Cette affirmation a été soutenue par le membre de la BCE, M. Knot, qui a déclaré qu'"une hausse des taux d'un demi-point reste une option pour juillet." Le grand avantage de la BCE dans sa lutte pour ancrer les anticipations d'inflation a été l'euro qui continue de s'apprécier par rapport au dollar américain depuis son plus bas niveau du 12 mai et qui a gagné plus de 1,0 % cette semaine.
La Banque populaire de Chine (PBOC) assouplit sa politique, le FOMC est en mode attentiste et la BCE rattrape son retard. Pour les investisseurs en crédit, cela conduit à de fortes opportunités de dislocation sur les marchés mondiaux et émergents. Nous pensons qu'il est judicieux, dans l'environnement actuel, de rester à un niveau élevé de la structure du capital et d'être diversifié au niveau mondial.
